Course Description 

 

The NRA Defensive Pistol Course is conducted by a select group of NRA Advanced Pistol Instructors. The training is objective based and will focus on the development of a defensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledgeskills, and attitude to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence. The course is a follow-on course to the NRA Basic Pistol or FIRST Steps Pistol Shooting Course. Upon successful completion of this training, students should know and be able to demonstrate a number of defensive pistol techniques and shoot a timed qualification course of fire.  

It is nothing like any of the other NRA pistol classes.   

Course Length: Approximately 8 to 10 hours

The following topics will be reviewed in the course:

·         The importance of carrying and using a pistol responsibly and ethically for personal protection

·         How the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling are applied to concealed carry

·         Basic principles of concealment

·         Presenting a pistol – re-holster

·         Mental awareness

·         Mental preparation to develop a defensive mindset for carrying and using a pistol for

              personal protection

·         Techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations

·         Explain the psychological and physiological changes that may occur during an attack

·         Flash sight picture

·         Reloading under stress

·         Clear common stoppages

·         Cover and concealment

·         Presenting a pistol from concealment and shoot targets at varying distances


Successful completion of this course fulfills the concealed weapons carry permit training requirement for the state of Florida.

Handgun Safety / Concealed Carry Qualification Training

        (Handgun/CCW 101)


Course Description

Handgun Safety / Concealed Carry Qualification Training is a basic course of instruction abbreviated to the most basic shooting skills, and the specifics of a particular model handgun.


This course is involves 4 - 4 ½ hours of classroom instruction, in which the student will be presented with practical lessons on the safe use, cleaning, and storage of their handgun.  Classroom instruction will be followed by a minimum of 1/2  hour, one-on-one, live-fire range training.  The student will be expected to fire a minimum of 50 rounds of ammunition, using a defensive caliber handgun.  The practical exercise covers a single position and type of target.  


Course Goal

“To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a specific handgun model safely.”

FIRST Steps Rifle - AR 15



Description

FIRST stands for “Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training”, a program the NRA developed to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new gun purchasers.   This FIRST Steps program is the basic courses abbreviated to the most basic shooting skills and the specifics of a particular model of rifle . . . the AR 15.


This course, because of its narrow focus, can be completed in three - four hours.  Students will get the NRA's The Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook and quick practical lessons on the safe handling, use, cleaning, and storage of their rifle.   The practical exercise teaches only a single firing position. 


Course Goal

“To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use an AR 15 rifle safely.”

Personal Protection Outside The Home


Short Description: Comprehensive and intensive in its approach to equip the defensive shooting candidate with the skills needed to survive serious adversity.


More Details: The course teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home. Students have the opportunity to attend this course using a quality strong side hip holster that covers the trigger, or a holster purse. From a review of safe firearms handling and proper mindset to presentation from concealment and multiple shooting positions, this course contains the essential skills and techniques needed to prevail in a life-threatening situation. 


The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home is divided into two levels (basic and advanced).   Level one is a nine-hour course and offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home.   After the classroom portion, students should expect to spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during level one.  Upon completion of level one, students may choose to attend level two, which is an additional five hours of range training and teaches advanced shooting skills.   


Level two involves five additional hours on the range and approximately 115 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition requirements are minimum and may be exceeded.  Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook,  NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the appropriate course completion certificates(s), NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home  (identifies strong-side hip holster or purse use) certificate, and NRA Advanced Personal Protection Outside The Home certificate.  


The NRA Advanced Personal Protection Outside The Home certificate of completion fulfills the concealed weapons carry permit training requirement in most states.

Personal Protection In The Home

 

Description

Unlike the other basic courses, the Personal Protection course covers defensive shooting. Self-defense is a topic somewhat distinct from the regular diet of shooting fundamentals, it can cover mindset, legal issues, decision-making under pressure, and planning for the worst. The Home Defense and Personal Protection course is designed around the use of the defensive firearm.

 

Although the course can be completed as quickly as six hours, the amount of information presented, and the probability of intensive question and answer sessions on the included topics, makes it likely that the course will take longer.

 

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook and intensive lessons on basics of defensive shooting, issues of self-defense, and other strategies for protecting the home and family.

 

Course Goal

“To develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense.”


Prerequisites

NRA Basic Pistol or FIRST Steps certification.

The Personal Protection course is intended for mature law-abiding adults, who have the mindset and seriousness necessary to properly perform the activities in the course. 

 

Course Completion

Upon the completion of this course the participant will understand the principles of home defense and personal protection.  The participant will have been presented with the techniques of "reinforcing the target" and making both the home and one's self less of a target for the criminal.   In addition, the participant will have been presented with the psychological tools to develop a survival and self-defense mindset, while better understanding the criminal mind.

An official NRA certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful completion that fulfills the concealed weapons carry permit training requirement in most states.

FIRST Steps Shotgun

 

Description

Basic Shotgun Shooting Course


Description

Short Description: Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target.


More Details: This course is at least ten-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns at moving targets. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components; shotgun shell malfunctions; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Shotgun Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

Basic Rifle

 

Description

A rifle is a long gun designed to be fired with two hands. It has a rifled bore (thus the name “rifle”) and is designed to shoot a specific size of ammunition. Rifles are often used in game hunting and in long range marksmanship competitions.

 

The Basic Rifle course can be as short as fourteen hours. In it students will get the NRA's The Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook and intensive lessons in safety, gun handling, fundamentals of rifle shooting, several practical exercises on the firing range, cleaning, storage, and a summary of rifle sports and activities.

 

Course Goal
